Tour Summary

Tanzania remains one of the premier destinations for chimpanzee tracking. As humans’ closest biological relatives, with over 98% genetic similarity, chimpanzees can be found in the wild in Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains, Gombe Stream, and Rubondo Island National Parks.

Lelwat Jungle Guides offers unique expeditions to these incredible locations, helping you realize your dream of coming face-to-face with chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Western Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kigoma Airport in western Tanzania, you will be greeted by our friendly guide and transferred to Kibirizi Port on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Here, you’ll board a private boat that will take you across the lake to Gombe National Park. After a smooth check-in at your cottage, you’ll have a short rest before embarking on your first chimpanzee tracking session. After an exciting one-hour observation, you’ll return to your cottage for an overnight stay. Lunch and dinner are provided on this day.

Day 2: Exploring Gombe Mountains

Following breakfast at your cottage, your chimpanzee tracking adventure continues. Please note that the maximum allowed time for watching the chimpanzees is one hour, and a minimum distance of ten meters must be maintained to ensure safety for both guests and primates. This day includes a trek to the Jane Goodall Peak, a visit to the Chimpanzee Research Center, and a stop at the Jane Goodall Museum. In the evening, you’ll sail back to Kigoma for an overnight stay at the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel. Breakfast and lunch are included on this day.

Day 3: Departure Day

On your final day, depending on your flight schedule, your guide may take you on a tour of historical sites such as the Ujiji train station and the Dr. Livingstone Museum. Afterward, you’ll say farewell to your guide and head to the airport for your flight, either to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.
